AI Script Generation and Cost Limits
How FoxCue generates standard and long-form scripts, keeps your draft safe in Script history, caps each job's estimated AI cost and shows a cost receipt.
When you click Generate Script, FoxCue writes a script from your brief, brand kit and selected sources in one budget-capped job. Your current draft is saved to Script history before anything is replaced, and each generation keeps a cost receipt.
Standard vs long-form scripts
| Standard | Long-form | |
|---|---|---|
| How it's written | One AI request | Source digests, an outline, then sections written one by one |
| Maximum AI calls | 1 | 24 (up to 15 source digests, 1 outline, up to 8 sections) |
| Where to choose it | Default | Script Length → Long-Form Script on a planned video, with a Target Duration |
Long-form generation runs in the background. Click Run in Background and keep working. Your draft stays available while it runs.
Generate or regenerate
- Open the script and click Generate Script (or Regenerate Script).
- If the script already has text, FoxCue asks Replace what you've written? Click Save a copy & replace. A copy of your current draft goes to Script history first.
- When it's done, you'll see Generated script saved.
If you kept editing while it generated, FoxCue doesn't overwrite your newer edits. The result opens in Generated Script Result, where you can Copy Result or Save a Copy & Use Result.
Open Generation activity and recovery to follow a running job or recover an earlier result.
Cost limits
- Each generation job has a default ceiling of USD $0.05 in estimated AI text costs. Through the API you can lower it with
cost_limit_usd, but not raise it. - The ceiling is enforced for the supported, costed models. For other AI providers, token and call limits still apply, but the job reports
cost_limit_enforced: falseand no dollar estimate. - Every regeneration starts a new budget.
- The ceiling covers AI writing only. Rendering, voice, images and research aren't included.
- Oversized requests fail instead of quietly dropping facts you selected.
These are estimates based on published provider rates, not an invoice. FoxCue has no billing yet. If a provider doesn't report usage, the estimate shows as unknown, never as zero.
The cost receipt
The generation viewer shows a short receipt with the estimate and the limit. Successful versions keep it in Script history. The full receipt lists the model, number of calls, token totals, reserved upper estimate, price date and source, limit and usage state.
Troubleshooting
- "Generation failed." The provider returned an error. Your previous script is kept. Try again.
- "Complete the brief first." Add a topic and usable facts or sources.
- "Long-form generation failed" / "Generation cancelled." Your current draft was kept.
Frequently asked questions
Does every script cost exactly $0.05?
No. $0.05 is the upper limit per job, not a price. Typical standard scripts estimate well under that. FoxCue doesn't charge for scripts today.
Will regenerating lose my edits?
No. FoxCue saves a copy of your current draft to Script history before replacing it, and keeps newer edits if you typed while it ran.
