Turn a Long Video into a YouTube Short (9:16)
Make a 9:16 Short from a long FoxCue or uploaded video: AI picks 3 or 4 moments cut on whole sentences, adds a hook card and end card, then you review.
Make a Short turns a long landscape video into a 9:16 hook reel for YouTube Shorts, Reels or TikTok. The AI picks three or four moments (problem, stakes, fix), cuts them on whole sentences, and adds intro and end cards. You review and edit the plan before it builds.
Make a Short
Open the tool
Library → Editing Tools → Make a Short, or Make a Short from This after another tool.
Choose the video
Pick a video from your Media Library or Rendered Videos, or upload one.
Set options
| Option | Choices | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Moments | 3 moments, 4 moments | 3 |
| Length of the moments | About 30 s, 40 s or 50 s of speech, before the 5 s of cards | About 40 s |
| Title | Optional. The AI suggests one from the video. Up to 200 characters. | — |
| Word-by-word captions | Burn captions of the speech too | Off |
Review the Plan
Check the Hook Card (the first 2.5 s, before the first moment), each moment's Kicker and On-screen headline, and the Full plan. Remove a moment with Remove this moment. A Short needs at least one.
Pick a style
Under Style, choose the look. Cards, captions and type come from the style, and only styles with 9:16 layouts are shown.
Approve and build the Short
FoxCue cuts the moments and builds the Short, usually in about a minute. Then Open in Editor to adjust it, or Render MP4 and Download MP4.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the Short?
About 30, 40 or 50 seconds of speech, plus about 5 seconds of cards.
What's the difference from "Also export in 9:16"?
Also export in 9:16 (when you finalize a recording) crops the whole video vertically. Make a Short picks the best moments and adds hook and end cards.
Do AI Overviews cite YouTube Shorts?
That depends on the query. Many software how-to answers favor longer videos, so use Shorts to drive discovery alongside a full tutorial.
